Editorial strategy documents and calendar on a slate desk

What is editorial strategy, and why does your content team need it?

Editorial strategy is the structured set of decisions that determines who you're writing for, what topics you'll cover, what format and tone you'll use, and how each piece connects to a broader business goal. Without it, content teams produce work that's individually decent but collectively incoherent — a blog that talks to everyone, and therefore nobody. Novaeforge builds your editorial strategy from the ground up, starting with an audience and competitor audit, moving through content pillar definition, and ending with a 90-day editorial calendar template that your team can immediately execute. We run this as a four-week engagement with two review sessions, delivering a living document your team owns and updates going forward.

What the editorial strategy engagement covers

A complete editorial strategy is built in four focused weeks, with your team involved at every stage so it actually gets used.

Audience and competitor audit

We analyse your existing content performance, map your top three to five competitors' editorial positioning, and identify the content gaps your audience is actively searching for but not finding. This audit forms the factual basis of every strategy decision we make.

Content pillar definition

We define three to five content pillars — thematic areas your brand will own — with clear rationale for why each pillar serves your audience and your business. Each pillar comes with a topic cluster map and a list of 20 seed topics to get your team started.

90-day editorial calendar template

A ready-to-use Notion or Google Sheets calendar template pre-populated with your first 12 weeks of topic slots, assigned content pillars, target keywords, and format recommendations — so your team can start publishing from a plan on day one.

Brand voice and style guidelines

A written style guide covering tone, vocabulary preferences, sentence structure standards, and formatting rules — detailed enough that a freelancer hired tomorrow can write on-brand without a briefing call.

What this engagement does not include

Editorial strategy is a planning and documentation service — it does not include content production. Novaeforge will not write articles, social posts, or email newsletters as part of this engagement. The output is a strategy system your existing team or freelancers can execute. We also don't guarantee specific traffic or ranking outcomes; those depend on execution consistency and external factors like search algorithm changes. What we do guarantee is a strategy document that is coherent, specific, and immediately executable by your team on handover day.

Questions about the editorial strategy engagement

How long does the engagement take?

The standard editorial strategy engagement runs four weeks from kickoff to final delivery. Week one is the audience and competitor audit. Weeks two and three cover pillar definition and calendar templating. Week four is review, revisions, and handover. We schedule two review sessions with your team during this period.

Do you need access to our existing content and analytics?

Yes. To do the audit properly, we'll need read access to your Google Analytics or equivalent, your CMS or content archive, and any keyword or SEO tools you're already using. If you don't have these set up, we'll note the gaps in the strategy document as setup priorities.

Who on our team needs to be involved?

At minimum, we need a single point of contact — typically your marketing lead or content manager — who can attend the two review sessions and answer questions about your audience and business goals. Involving additional stakeholders in the pillar definition session is useful but not required.

What format is the final deliverable?

All deliverables are handed over as a shared Notion workspace or a Google Drive folder — your choice. The editorial calendar is in Google Sheets or Notion database format. You retain full ownership of all documents on handover.
